Alternative Practice
2023
The design field has arrived at a critical juncture where climate
change, white supremacy, and inequity can no longer be ignored.
Designer’s roles, methods, approaches, and responsibilities have
been entrenched for decades. The Alternative Practice Agency will chronicle individuals,
agencies, labs, collectives, and research teams in design working
outside of traditional modes. This project’s foundation is a
collection of portraits that aims to detail how design professionals
are reimagining practice itself to better address the inherent
failures of our social, political, and environmental systems. Only
by providing alternative paths to practice can these systems be
re-designed. The world is in desperate need of radical design
solutions but traditional methods continue to step in the way
of real change. Innovative alternative practices must be studied,
supported, networked, and properly equipped to make more
meaningful and collective change.
